Practical Books You Have To Read

More often than not, books are the key to acquiring practical knowledge. Without reading the right types of books, one can hardly imagine learning anything useful. This basic principle can be applied to pretty much everything. That being said, it can be pretty hard finding the right type of book to pick up. Luckily, we have you covered.

This article presents readers with a quick guide to a couple of books that share information you can use for everyday situations.  The books here cover diverse topics like migraines and headaches as well as basic home maintenance tips that everyone must know.

Barometric Pressure Headache Treatment by John Bernstein

It may come as a surprise to most but there are actually many types of headaches. A barometric pressure headache is a specific type of migraine that can be caused by external stimuli. Specifically, these headaches are triggered by changes in the weather condition.

As this book would tell you, these headaches usually occur when the outside barometric pressure lowers. This can create a stark difference between the pressure of the air in your sinuses and the air pressure of the environment. For those who have experienced it directly, these headaches can be rather painful and they simulate the symptoms of a regular migraine.

The most common occurrence for these headaches are plane rides. As the plane takes off, there can be a rather drastic change in the air pressure. For most people, they will experience the popping of the ear as their body adjusts to the environmental changes. However, if your body fails to do that by itself, then you may suddenly experience a sharp pain on your frontal lobe. This signals the onset of this particular type of headache.

To learn more about these migraines, make sure to get this book by John Bernstein. The author succinctly presents all the things you need to know about these migraines, from a detailed description of the symptoms to an analysis of the possible causes and triggers. It also delves into the discussion of the cures, from medicinal and pharmaceutical options to the most effective preventive measures you could use.

Home Improvement Books

The topic of home improvement is a dense and complicated one. As one would expect, it is a multifaceted affair. That being said, instead of simply choosing a single book recommendation for this topic, we have chosen to present a couple of texts which we believe could help you in your quest to make your home neat and tidy.

  • How Your House Works by Charlie Wing – Having an understanding of your home’s different systems can help you keep the costs of repair and construction down. This book seeks to help you ensure that the professionals you hire are installing the right parts and doing the right job.
  • The New Bohemians by Justine Blakeney – More than having the practical know-how, homeowners must also understand how to make their space truly their own.

Reading is one of the best things you can do with your free time. So, make sure to give these books a try.

Science Fiction Classic: Philip K. Dick

If there is one author that helped transform the entire science fiction genre, then Philip K. Dick would definitely be it. Throughout his career, he published no less than 44 novels and just over 100 short stories. In the era of adaptation, one would hardly be surprised to find that 12 of his books have been made into film, further cementing the scope of his influence on popular culture.

A recurring theme in most of his works is the question of authenticity. He has repeatedly asked the question of what is real and what is an illusion. His work contains his musings on the future of technology and society. These lead his characters to situations where they see that the blurring of the wall that separates these two worlds.

He has certainly not shied away from asking the deep philosophical questions. At the same time, he challenges his readers to make their own judgments. Throughout his work, one can see how he ponders the meaning of humanity, identity, and justice. That is mighty impressive especially coming from a genre that was once belittled and dismissed as infantile.

The Rat Trilogy By Haruki Murakami

Haruki Murakami is a world renowned author from Japan. He has been praised for his wit and mastery of the storytelling language. He has been heralded as a postmodern master of the medium, often drawing on the emotions that plague us during our dark times while also evoking the happiness of love that comes with life.

While his later works have been characterized by the surreal twist and descents into limbo, his early works were certainly a bit more straightforward. His first foray into fiction can be summarized by his three novels, popularly dubbed as the Trilogy of the Rat.

His first novel, Hear the Wind Sing, was published in 1979. This was soon followed by its sequel, Pinball, 1973 the following year. In 1982, the third installment of the trilogy was released. It was entitled A Wild Sheep Chase.

All of these novels centered on the adventure of its unnamed protagonist and his friend, the Rat. It is a well-known fact that Murakami thought his first two novels were immature and flimsy. However, the third novel was met with critical success and this would push him to further pursue his career in writing.
